What is Flaxseed?
Flax, whose Latin name means "most useful", is one of the most ancient of herbs and was highly valued for its medicinal properties. Flaxseeds are the hard, tiny seeds of Linum usitatissimum, the flax plant. Dietary flax is grown in Canada in areas with no pollution. The seeds are harvested, milled and vacuum packed for ultimate freshness.

Where does it grow?
The richest flaxseed is grown in Canada. The main factors that contribute to its superior quality are the variety of hardy seeds, wealth of the land, the humidity, the quality of the light, the temperatures of the summer days and the long winter nights. Together these factors combine to raise the content levels of the Omega-3's and preserve the pathogenic agents of the seeds.

The crop seeds are harvested and milled - fresh. Then immediately contained in space-age, vacuum-sealed, light-tight bags (425 grams).

The packages are then sent to Ireland to be labeled and bar coded under European law by Linwoods.

How much to I take per day?
You can start with 1 tablespoon per day and work your way up to 2 tablespoons. If you have cholesterol or trying to reduce a tumor - most healers will recommend 5 tablespoons per day.

How long will a package of flaxseed last?
Taken daily, a 425g. Vacuum-Sealed Bag of organic, milled flaxseed should last one person - one month. However, if you choose to cook and bake with it and explore the incredible variety of recipes and meal planning options - then you will need more.

How do I eat it?
Flaxseed can be added to just about any recipe. It has a delicious nutty flavour. Experimenting with flaxseed in the kitchen can make daily meal-planning more healthy and exciting. For people with busy lives, flaxseed can be sprinkled onto morning cereal, mixed with jam or honey on toast, blended with fruits and milk into a drink, tossed into a lunchtime salad or sandwich - or enjoyed straight up with hot water as a soothing beverage.

Where do I keep my package?
It is recommended to keep your milled flaxseed in a very cool place - preferable the refrigerator or even the freezer. This is the best way to keep the components of the flaxseed in a stable condition.

How will I know when it is working?
Firstly, you will notice an increase in your energy levels. Within two weeks, you will notice that your hair, nails and skin are growing stronger and repairing. Within a month, you will notice that your joints don't hurt and your cholesterol is more balanced.

When did all this medical research on flaxseed start?
In 1904, German gave birth to one of the most fascinating and intelligent women of the 20th century. Her name was Dr. Johanna Budwig (1904-2003). She was a top biochemist holding an impressive Ph.D in Natural Science and was nominated seven times for the Nobel Prize. She has been hailed as one of the greatest authorities on diet and its relation to health and well-being.

In the mid 1950's, Dr. Budwig began her long and meticulous research on the importance of essential fatty acids (linoleic and linolenic) in the diet.

Her subsequent discoveries and announcements sparked mixed reactions. While the general public was eager for this astounding information, German manufacturers of commercial dietary fats (margarine, hard shortening, vegetable oils) went to extremes to prevent her from publishing her findings.

Fortunately, persistence paid off and till this day Dr. Johanna Budwig is world renowned for her important discoveries on the benefits of flaxseed and its gifts – Omega 3’s - to cure cancer.

In a speech that she delivered on November 2, 1959 in Zurich, Switzerland, Dr. Budwig said, "Without these fatty acids (omega 3’s), the respiratory enzymes cannot function and the person suffocates, even when he is given oxygen-rich air. A deficiency in these highly unsaturated fatty-acids impairs many vital functions. First of all, it decreases the person's supply of available oxygen. We cannot survive without air and food; nor can we survive without these fatty acids.”

After reading about Dr. Budwig's numerous successes with flaxseed, many other scientists became interested in studying its many benefits. A great number of studies have looked at flaxseed’s ability to help with a variety of serious diseases and health conditions, and the results have been impressive.

Dr. Johanna Budwig’s own incredible health and longevity is a tribute to the benefits of good eating habits combined with 2 tablespoons of flaxseed per day.

There are hundreds of websites and links to Dr. Johanna Budwig and her research for you to explore on your own.
