ECZEMA

The term eczema is used to describe all kinds of red, blistering, oozing, scaly, brownish, thickened, and itching skin conditions. Examples of eczema include dermatitis, allergic contact eczema, seborrheic eczema, and nummular eczema.

Organically grown flaxseed contains an important oil for those suffering from eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne and aging skin. Flaxseeds are a rich source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) an Omega-3 series of essential fatty acids because the body cannot make them and must obtain them from external sources.

ALA is needed because it is the precursor to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and the series 3 Prostaglandins, which are necessary for the regulation of cellular activity. Series 3 Prostaglandins protect the body against the effects of high blood pressure, inflammation and water retention by inhibiting the production of series 2 prostaglandins, which promote inflammation and water retention. People who suffer from eczema and psoriasis should add flaxseed to their diet.

The anti-inflammatory benefits of flaxseed can also be seen when it is used externally. Topical use of flaxseed as a poultice, allows the body to absorb some of the essential fatty acids necessary for healthy cellular activity. It helps soften and heal skin abrasions, reduce the swelling and redness of lesions due to skin disease and improves the overall health of the skin.

Skin is the largest organ of the body and requires special attention. Like the liver and the kidneys, the skin functions to eliminate toxins from the body, which it does through sweating. Anything that blocks the skin pores from breathing can cause infections and skin disorders.

Omega-3 deficiency means that too few of the prostaglandins are formed that promote skin health, colour, elasticity and the circulation of blood to the skin. Omega-3 deficiency can manifest itself in dry and scaling skin, eczema, scaling of skin on the scalp, dermatitis, excessive sun sensitivity and acne.

Skin, hair, and nails all consist of a fibrous protein known as keratin. Keratin production is hormonally controlled, which is why hormonal disorders can show up in nail growth patterns, and is also one reason for hair loss and acne at certain hormone-shifting times in our lives.

Unfortunately, too many women have renounced all types of fat in pursuit of an ideal figure. Often those who suffer most from the disorders are the women who are trying hardest to obtain radiant skin.

Research by the Dermatology Department of the School of Medicine at the University of California, Davus (US) has shown that the use flaxseed as a regular diet will improve your skin complexion. Healthier skin is definitely noticeable soon after regular use of flaxseed.

“Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids promote radiant skin, shiny hair and healthy, strong nails. This is due to the fact that they promote the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K by stimulatingly the production of hormones and promoting the transport of oxygen throughout the body.

They also protect against eczema, dandruff, psoriasis, dryness and hair loss. In other words they ensure in many ways that we remain beautiful on the outside."

My son had eczema. The lotions helped, but it never went away until I started feeding him milled flaxseed in his oatmeal every morning (about one heaping teaspoon). We skip a day or 2 a week, but when we go away on vacation and forget the flaxseed for several days, the rash comes right back. Natasha H
