CAIRO, Aug 6 (KUNA) -- Regional
research center hormones department assistant Professor Dr. Hana'a Hamdi told
KUNA that soy beans, flaxseed and ginseng roots are effective in the treatment
of osteoporosis, a life-threatening disease affecting bones.
Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to
break. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress
painlessly until a bone breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures,
occur typically in the hip, spine, wrist, and ribs, although the disease can
affect any bone in the body.
Dr. Hana'a Hamdi said soy products, flaxseeds, and ginseng roots have proven to
be very effective in strengthening the body against osteoporosis that affects
women especially after menopause or of old age.
While women are four times more likely than men to develop the disease, men also
suffer from it.
Soybean activates the ovary to naturally produce estrogen and its protein helps
the body absorb calcium to prevent osteoporosis that is caused by low levels of
estrogen in women, or very low testosterone levels in men, she added.
Dr. Hana'a Hamdi added food that contains omega-3 helps fight bone weakening
enzymes in the body and activate the production of the needed hormones to
maintain healthy bones.
